Budgeting Struggles May 27, 2009

Filed under: debt — secretlybroke @ 1:01 pm

So as we near the end of May… my first real full month of budgeting and watching it every day… I am finding some struggles.

I am not sure what to do with the “extra” balance that I have at the end of the month. I know budgeting is a rolling process, but I am struggling with making a realistic budget and paying as much as possible towards debt while also making sure I have enough money in the bank to cover everything at the right times. I guess I need to figure out how to literally live “paycheck to paycheck” again since I am trying to allocate all of my funds somewhere. Back in college I would let my checking account get down to $0.50 and not get too worried. Now I start to freak out if I have less than $500 in there… no clue why. If I am managing all of my expenses right and know when the big ticket dollars are coming out for bill payments, etc… then why would I freak if I have less than $500? Its just a mental thing.

Starting with June 1st, I am going to add my June 1st bank balance to my “income” and pretend I had zero dollars beforehand. And then manage my funds by each paycheck, which will require some moving around of payment dates…

I hope this works. I am so one of those people that likes “step by step” instructions on “how to budget” and “how to get out of debt”. But I can’t find anything like that anywhere. Yes, I know the basics…but I need someone to go over the nitty gritty details with me! Hopefully one day my rantings and trial & error will help someone else like me.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait! May 19, 2009

Wohoo!

I have been needing to buy my flight to Cincinatti, Ohio in July for a wedding I am in. I have already flown there 2 other times for $150 RT and $180 RT. When I have been looking to book flights recently they have all been minimum $240!!! There was no way I was going to spend that much on a flight from Boston to Ohio, esp when I had already spent way less than that earlier this year.

So I checked Kayak.com again today and all the sudden… a ton of Delta flights dropped down to $178!! Wahoo! Best news (besides the price that is!) is that I get to fly in and out of Logan because most cheaper flights fly in and out of New Hampshire or Rhode Island which adds travel time, stress and $20 shuttle each way. I also arrive and leave around the same time of the rest of the bridal party so we can all be picked up together or carpool. AND they are both direct non-stop flights! I can’t remember the last time I didn’t have a layover!

Good things come to those who wait! :-D

Credit Fixes May 14, 2009

Along with the $92 ding on my credit report, I also had 2 old late payments. One was for one of my credit cards back in 2005 that I can’t remember my excuse for with that one. And the other was in 2007 for my student loans because I thought I had set up my automatic payment, but it didn’t go through correctly. I never corrected it and didn’t realize how big of an effect it had on my credit score. So after a little bit of online research (seriously, how did people function efficiently before Google???), I was able to figure out how to get these two corrected now.

I signed up for Score Watch through www.myfico.com since they have a free 30 day trial. Now that I am focused on fixing specific things that should impact my score greatly, this should be helpful to watch it increase. I hope that things will improve greatly in this month. Through the site I saw that even though the collections company said they sent in the updated record showing my payment, it was not showing yet.

I also was “scolded” by the ScoreWatch people that I had these 2 late payment dings. I immediately called the collections co, credit card co and student loans. The collections company said to fax over the page showing it wasn’t posted yet, along with my explanation as to why it should be completely removed (remember, its not my fault!). So I just did that, and that should be taken care of ASAP.

Next, the credit card company said they can’t deal with it over the phone since it was from so long ago, which is what a lot of the “How to removed late payment dings” articles said. The credit card company suggested I send in a letter, and the online articles suggested that I dispute the ding. I am doing both.

Finally, I called student loans and they couldnt help me at all, said to just dispute it. Ok, fine, done. So through the ScoreWatch site I was able to easily submit my dispute letter. I ended up doing it for all 3 dings, so we will see if that speeds things up at all!

Stay tuned!

Sad Day May 14, 2009

So there have been many reasons to post lately, but I have been super busy with school. I am in the middle of finals which end on Monday! Wohoo! Can’t wait! But I have been doing lots of playing around with finances, a few big purchases, etc, all of which I will blog about next week. In the meantime, I went to check my bank balance…and knew this was coming, but just had to document it…. a very sad day for my checking accounts!

sadday

It is all ok, because as of midnight tonite I will have my extra May paycheck! Wohoo! And very soon the $4,300 payout on the insurance from the vet fiasco will be mine as well to pay towards evil evil credit card debt! And don’t worry, that isnt my real savings account, I have opened an ING Savings account where there is $600 in savings currently, plus playing with $50 on INGs Sharebuilder since I got an email to get a free $25 for using it. We’ll see how that goes! More on all this later! Back to work, then studying for my last final! Which coincidently…is Finance! I will vent on that topic as well!

Budgeting April 28, 2009

I have spent the past few days putting together a budget. I had NO clue where to start so after a little bit of research, inspiration on other PF blogs and websites and overall experience with making plenty of half-assed budgets in my life that I don’t stick … I was able to fumble my way through a new budget. In the end I am very happy with what I came up with! Here is how I did it, step-by-step:

1. Figure out my monthly income (easy…the one thing I have a good track on!)

2. Download all transactions on my bank card since Jan 1st of this year into an Excel spreadsheet. I figured the last 3+ months have been a relatively good starting point to use. I use my debit card for basically everything, which makes figuring out where my money goes pretty easy. I rarely take cash out, so it was easy to itemize out where the cash went as well.

3. Sort the transactions by amount as I found that was much easier to itemize. It puts all of my small food/lunch purchases together, big purchases including rent payments on top, etc. I was pretty easily able to itemize everything into the following categories:

  • Rent – duh
  • Debt Pymt – all payments made towards debts (usually have flexible payments due amount)
  • Fixed Bills – all payments made for utilities, gym, cell etc (all have fixed payment must be made each month)
  • Entertainment – anything spent while out socially, drinks, admissions, nice restaurants, etc. Also I am including Hair & nails in this category, I know, random, but it works in my mind. I don’t get either done THAT often, so when I do its kind of an “entertainment” reason or expense.
  • Food – groceries, lunch during the week, coffee, etc. More “everyday” food
  • Shopping – VERY large category that currently includes Target trips for home good, Ikea, regular clothes shopping, etc. Amount budgeted is transferred into a separate “Shopping checking account” that I recently opened. The point is that if I have money in that account, I will never feel bad about spending it. I will also not allow myself to overspend into my savings or food budgets.
  • Travel – the amount budgeted here goes into the Shopping checking account as well and is used while on travel or for plane tickets, etc.
  • Wilbur – food, vet bills & pet insurance for the lil rugrat. Boarding costs fall into the travel budget as it is a cost of being able to travel, rather than “puppy upkeep”
  • Savings – all leftover, plus Bank of America’s Keep the Change program

4. From there I split everything into the categories (mind you still keeping the dates attached to each item). And then I figured out how much I really did spend each month in each category, but then I also added up all items and divided by 3.5 (since it had been 3 and 1/2 months of data) to find an average of sorts.

5. At that point I was able to easily figure out how much I was spending per month and how much I SHOULD be spending per month in each category. Here is what the spreadsheet currently looks like

budget4092

Behind the scenes there is some formulas to make things super easy which is nice. I have created a tab for each month and modified the budget slightly as needed. I am only $35 over the budget that I just made for this month! So hopefully I will be able to easily be under budget next month. Especially since next month I have an extra paycheck AND the insurance payout from the vet fiasco. Also next month I will be doing all of my credit card consolidating and maneuvering since the collections company said that the ding doesn’t get credited and sent over to the credit monitors until the end of the month.

Ugh I hate the waiting game! That might be the most frustrating part in debt repayment! Once you have a good solid plan in place, you just want to press fast forward and watch the plan play out without the waiting! Patience is a virtue!

Fashion Budgeting April 23, 2009

So I have known that I need to rethink my shopping habits. I constantly read about how to have a wardrobe of mostly quality classic pieces and use cheaper trendy pieces as “accessories” to keep in fashion. I know this, but it has never really hit home and REALLY made sense until I read Megan’s post on The Ultimate Geeks Guide to Fashion Budgeting. Maybe it was the numbers? The pyramid? I dunno. But the whole post is well written and I have already opened a new account that I slowly contribute to and I am only allowed to use for my wardrobe.

As I have mentioned before I am always the one on the look out for deals. I never go out shopping with a list of what I need. Instead I go out with the mindset of just needing to find the cutest and cheapest quality pieces I can find. And what does that do for me? Its gets me an entire closet of cute blouses that I like a lot, but don’t really LOVE. And I have gotten to the point of boredom with my wardrobe. I need more style, I need more variety and overall a lil spice!

First stop: Fashion First Aid!

Thanks Charade and thanks FB for the great interview that sent me over to her!!

Additional Goal: Increase Credit Score April 22, 2009

So along with the obvious goals of paying down the debt as much as possible and saving as much as possible in an EF, I also want to track my credit score through this process. It is current 682 which isn’t too bad for being so far in debt and having many cards close to being maxed out. But I know the joint credit card with my dad helps since it has a $15,000 credit limit and we only have $5,000 in school debt on there.

As mentioned in my previous post, I do have a very minor $92 ding that I need to clear before moving forward with consolidating, negotiating down interest rates and increasing credit limits. The good news is that I noticed today the $92 check has cleared, so I will burn a call into the collection company to make sure my credit report will be cleared shortly.

I have started editing my budget, but it won’t truly be useful to start studying until I reorganize the credit card mess

Making the Grade April 22, 2009

After seeing the CNN Money Financial Tool assessment on the DEBT FREE blogs of Single Ma, FB, and Little Miss Moneybags, I was curious to do one myself as I always love taking quizes, but really thought I would get a BIG FAT “F” on this one… to my surprise…

cnnmoney

Wow! Maybe they don’t give “F”? Or maybe since I am already on a good road of halting spending, and focusing on saving and paying down debts then that is just fine… for now. Lets also make a goal to get a B by the end of the year!

Another Day of Shopping "Deals"… April 19, 2009

Ok, so at least I admit I have a problem… but yesterday was an exception… I really did have an excuse…. really…

My sister works at Anthropologie (i know, right?) so she is able to give her immediate family employee discount cards. Luckly I rarely have the desire to use it since its only for 20% off full priced merchandise at Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and Free People. It comes in handy when I decide I desperately need an $18 candle or $10 soap (…aka never…). BUT there is one exception. A few times a year the lovely people at Urban Inc decide to give all cardholders 40% off the entire store, even sale! Wohoo! And that time is now…

So yesterday a shopping a went. It was the last day for the Urban discount, and I am not that big a fan of Urban anymore as I am no longer 22 and wanting to spend $100 to look like I just rolled out of bed. There are always the exceptions there, so I scoured the store anyways and was able to walk away with only spending $25 total on a super cute Coincidence & Chance chiffon back cardigan in plum and Nina Garcia’s new 100 book that I am going to use to help edit down my very random wardrobe.

Then I headed over the Anthropologie and fell in love the moment I walked into the store. So refreshing to walk in there after Urban Outfitters… After trying on a ton of things, I was able to walk away with $90 in damage… $30 each for Joes Jeans wide-leg trouser jeans and these two adorable spring wardrobe additions! Both are even cuter on and in person! The skirt may even go with the new cardigan.

I also headed into Banana Republic and think I decided that I am finally over my Banana Republic addiction… whew… and then walked into J.Crew and realized that I think my Banana addiction has instead shifted to Anthropologie and J.Crew… oh well. I was able to handle myself in J.Crew…today.

So all in all it was a successful day. I was reminded why I banned myself from shopping 4 months ago, but I really had a good excuse yesterday. And $120 on five very quality pieces that all made me very happy is a good deal!

Next post… new budgeting guidelines. I’m opening up Excel right now to redesign my 2 year old budget spreadsheet…

Less $$ Talk, More About ME! April 18, 2009

Ok, so this was getting to be waaay too much about money and not enough about me, how I got here, and why I am “secretly” broke.

So my brokeness isn’t that secret, it is just that for most of the people immediately in my life may be a little shocked to hear just how much debt I am in. I have ALWAYS been very frugal, always been the one to find the best deals on things. I can put great Banana Republic outfits together for less than $50…easy. Cheapest, but best quality digital camera…done. $80 Tahari peacoat…I wouldn’t pay anything more.

So then how did I get into so much debt?? Well, first thing to know, is that all that stuff does add up if you keep going…problem #1. Then the rest of the problems mostly stack up in the travel category. Starting in college, my ex of 5 years was in NC while I was in San Diego, so there went $3,000 in plane tickets over a few years… charge it! Relationship over? Still owe $3,000….boo.

Then I studied abroad in Europe for a semester (see school debt for that bill), and there begins my travel itch that I still can’t scratch! Luckly, I have been able to satisfy the itch in the US for the time being, but I hear Australia calling my name…..someday soon! Over the past 5 years my best friends have scattered all over the country and I always find a reason to visit. My parents and sister live in Seattle, my closest friend currently lives in Boston near me, but will be moving to Chicago in Sept. My closest college friend moved to Ohio last year and is getting married this year (cha-ching, cha-ching… two trips to Ohio and one to Vegas for the bachelorette…). Then the long list of friends and family that I left in Los Angeles that I am trying to visit at least once a year. I have only visited once since I moved and I already have a trip booked (and paid for in cash!) for June in conjunction with the Vegas trip. Kill two birds with one stone!

I also know that many of my friends and family think that since I have the “ability” to move across the country, live in my own apartment in Beacon Hill, have a cush corporate job at a biotech AND jetset all over the US with my adorable Boston Terrier puppy…I MUST have no money problems. WRONG! I’m just really good at knowing how to get into debt… Do I regret any of it? No. Do I wish I fixed this just a bit sooner? Yes. Am I finally ready to take this ACTUALLY seriously. YES!
